On a breezy, sunny, dusty day, the 5th Sir John Wilson School Soccer Tournament got underway at Gulshan Youth Club. 6 teams came together to battle for the trophy, Sir John Wilson, Scholastica, The Australian School AUSIS, International Turkish Hope School ITHS, Sunnydale and international School Dhaka ISD. The fixture commenced with two pools of 3 teams.
It was a lacklustre beginning, the first four matches ended in goalless draws. At last, SJWS blasted into action with four goals against AUSIS. It was game on! In Pool B, ITHS responded by beating Sunnydale 2-0. This set up the semi-finals: SJWS, winners of Pool A against Scholastica, runners up in Pool B, ITHS, winners of Pool B, against ISD, runners up of Pool A.
Both semis seem a disappointment, looking at the goalless draw score line, but this hides the fact that they were well fought, enjoyable games, played in good spirit. In both, extra time brought no relief. Penalty shoot outs determined the finalists: Scholastica against ISD.
Neither team had scored a goal in the tournament but Scholastica moved up a gear and Faraz Rahim powered 4 goals into the back of the ISD net in the first half, delighting their coach and supporters. In the second half a young ISD side defended valiantly and broke away for a consolation goal.
Scholastica were crowned winners of the tournament. ISD did not leave empty handed as they picked up the FAIR PLAY trophy for their sportsmanship.
